Yesterday, September 27 - World Tourism Day, the Sixth Annual Congress was held with the international participation of the Bulgarian Union of Balneology and Spa Tourism (BSPPA) in Sofia. The Union's Governing Council and its members across the country have congratulated themselves on the historic success of health tourism.
This is great news for Bulgaria: over 70 million Germans will now be able to come for balneotherapy and physiotherapy in Bulgaria at the expense of German health insurance funds. Thousands of Germans are expected to arrive by the next year.
On September 20th this year The German National Association of Health Insurance Funds (GKV-Spitzenverband) has expanded the list of countries in which it recognizes the provision of medical outpatient services (a total of 14 approved countries) to which Bulgaria has been added.

This means that German citizens who come to our country through health insurance funds in Germany will pay only 10 percent of the cost for rehabilitation or prevention spent in our country. The remaining amount will be covered by the health fund.
According to the German-Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Germany, there are currently 109 compulsory health insurance funds plus Social Care funds. Of the approximately 83 million people in Germany, over 73 million were insured at the end of last year.
More than 20 million people use out-of-hospital prevention options annually at home and abroad. The health fund covers about 90 percent of patients' costs for treatment. It is mainly about patients with musculoskeletal problems.
The German-Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Bulgarian Union for Balneology and Spa Tourism work together to create a health tourism brochure, in particular for outpatient prevention, outpatient treatment, spa and wellness. This booklet is the first way to get a closer look at the German health insurance funds on the Bulgarian market, medical institutions and hotels.
